About the Exhibition
Shaped over millennia by human activity, much of the Irish landscape bears traces of labour, use and meaning. Through painting and making, Conor O’Connell explores the material presence of landscapes and objects as carriers of memory, skill and cultural continuity. His practice considers how remnants of prehistoric life persist within the everyday landscape, often unnoticed, yet continuing to shape contemporary understandings of place.
Living in the rural west of Ireland provides an ongoing source of inspiration, with much of O’Connell’s recent work focusing on local archaeological landscapes. These sites, shaped by generations of human interaction, have existed both at the centre and at the very periphery of society throughout their long histories. Through their material and visual traces, O’Connell considers how the past remains present within the landscape, and how these traces continue to inform a sense of place, identity and belonging.
The exhibition spans both galleries, continuing around the back of the building into Gallery 2 in Greer’s Yard, where further works can be viewed.
